Environment Canada is looking for people who would be interested in training as a Canwarn Storm Spotter.
Environment Canada Warning Preparedness Meteorologist Geoff Coulson explains there's no cost for the training and no age restrictions.
The training takes about two and a half hours, and trainees learn how to recognize storms moving into the area, and how to distinguish between storms that are likely to cause damage and those that are not. They've a special email address so they can report the serious storms.
Coulson adds the Canwarn program benefits the Storm Spotters because they learn about weather systems, and Environment Canada benefits because it allows them to ground-truth conditions that appear on their radar.
The training session for Huron County will be held on Wednesday, April 20 from 7pm until 9:30pm at the Emergency Services Training Centre in Blyth.
Coulson does ask trainees to confirm their attendance just to give them an idea of how many people to expect, and that can be done by emailing him at [email protected].
He notes interest in the area has increased noticeably in the years following the Goderich tornado.
