Huron County Looking At Safer Cycling Ideas

Huron County is looking at several options for providing safe cycling in the county.

Director of Operations Steve Lund sits on the county's cycling committee, which is made up of cyclists and other stakeholders.

He says one possibility is paved shoulders along highways, like other provinces have.  He also explains they are looking at widening the paved shoulders on some roads in the county, but adds there is a cost to consider.

"There is a cost to providing bicycle facilities in terms of infrastructure; other provinces do provide paved shoulders for instance.   Ontario seems to be lagging that way and there are other safety issues in terms of bicycle safety and things that they can do to make themselves safer," says Lund.

He says the county is also looking at cycling paths that are separated from - but run parallel to the road.

"There are currently a couple of separated facilities near Huron County that we are looking at for instance the trail near Grand Bend," adds Lund.

He suggests the G2G Trail and the proposed Port to Point Trail might also have potential.

Lund adds education of both cyclists and motorists on how to safely share the road is a key to addressing the need for safe cycling opportunities in Huron County.
