Owen Sound Hospital Receives Baby Friendly Designation

The Owen Sound Regional Hospital is just the fourth location in the province to earn recognition as Baby-Friendly.

The Grey Bruce Health Services says it is also the first site withing The Southwest Local Health Integration Network to receive the designation.

Owen Sound hospital complied with ten steps to support and promote the baby friendly environment, with an emphasis exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of an infant's life. .

The program launched by the World health organization and UNICEF supports all infants regardless of feeding choice, and encourages immediate skin to skin contact after birth to promote early bonding.

Approximately 750 babies are born every year at the Owen Sound Hospital.

“Staff in our Women and Child Care Unit and beyond have worked hard to create a culture that protects, promotes, and supports breastfeeding, which evidence indicates will lead to healthier children, and in the long run, healthier communities,” said Lance Thurston, President and CEO of GBHS.
