Backpack Program Still Needed in Grey-Bruce

The demand for free back-to-school backpacks is holding steady in Grey-Bruce, and that's an indication many families are still struggling.

The Bruce Grey United Way fills the backpacks with school supplies and they are given to needy families.

Executive Director Francesca Dobbyn says they gave out about two thousand two years ago, and about 2,200 last year.

They will distribute about the same number this year, which is troublesome since there are fewer kids in school.

"We have declining enrolment in our communities so our numbers really should be dropping, but they're climbing which tells us the people that are here are struggling more and more," says Dobbyn.

Those needing backpacks can call the Bruce Grey United Way in Owen Sound or dial the 2-1-1 information service.
