HPHA CEO Says Residency Cuts A Complicated Issue

The Ontario Medical Association has expressed concerns over the province's announcement that it is cutting 50 medical residency positions over the next two years.

The C-E-O of the Huron-Perth Healthcare Alliance says he understands the concerns but also points out the issue is a complicated one.

Andrew Williams says it's very difficult to predict what the needs of the health care industry five or 10 years down the road.

Williams adds planning is critical and requires consultation with all of the stakeholders to try and achieve a balance between supply and demand.

Williams notes they weren't involved in any discussions regarding this decision but he hopes and expects there was a lot of planning and consultation leading up to the decision.

He also points out finding that balance between supply and demand is a moving target and changes regularly as technology improves and the need for specialists in different fields changes with it.
