Huron County has received just under $44,000 in funding through the Federal Enabling Accessibility fund to make the Huron County Museum more accessible.
Cultural Services Director Meighan Wark explains because of the nature of some of the exhibits at the museum, temperature and climate have to be controlled, which means the heavy doors leading to many of the exhibits have to remain closed.
That presents accessibility issues for anyone with a mobility problem or even parents with small children as they move from one area of the museum to another, so push button doors will be added.
Wark says the new funding will allow the museum to create wheelchair accessible washrooms as well.
The county will match the almost $44,000 from the federal program. The announcement was made by Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb at the Huron County Museum on Thursday.
Wark says they hope to have the renovations completed by the end of this year.
