Fire Forces Evacuation Of Owen Sound Apartment Building

Residents of an apartment complex in Owen Sound may be allowed back into their building later today.

Just before 8:30pm last evening, the Owen Sound Fire Department, Grey Bruce Emergency Medical Services and Owen Sound police responded to reports of smoke in the hallway of the Victoria Towers complex on 9th St. W.

Firefighters encountered dense smoke in the main hallway on the second floor. The fire was quickly contained and put out.

But because of the amount of smoke and the concern of the fire spreading, the residents of the complex were evacuated. The apartments are home to many elderly people, some with mobility problems, and EMS was able to safely evacuate everyone. There are no reported cases of smoke inhalation or injuries.

Some residents were able to stay with family or friends, while others were put up in a local motel for the night.

The fire appears to have started in an electrical box on the second floor. Hydro One disconnected the power to the building. Electricians will be inspecting the building today and making repairs before the "all clear" is given and residents can return.
