Perth County OPP officers are investigating a weekend break, enter and mischief at a commercial mink farm east of St. Marys.
Between 6pm Saturday evening and 8am Sunday morning, someone entered the property on Perth Line 9, cut out a section of the chain link perimeter fence and entered the barn area.
Once inside they opened up approximately 1,600 female mink cages allowing the animals to escape the property.
Employees have since been able to locate nearly 1,000 of the animals, but some were dead.
The nursing babies that remained in the cages are not expected to survive. About 600 mink are still missing.
The replacement costs to the business could exceed $200,000.
