New Construction On the Rise

Several local municipalities are starting to see a turnaround in new construction after a slow start to the year.

By the end of March, Wellington North had issued $3.3-million in building permits, compared to just $1.9-million for the same period last year.

This year’s total includes almost $1-million in agricultural permits and $1.6-million in residential permits.

Meaford’s building department sold fewer permits last month than in March 2014, but value of those permits was considerably higher than the same month of last year.

Meaford Chief Building Official Rick Carefoot listed the total building value of the nine permits sold last month at $760,000.

This was an increase of 67 percent over the $445,000 for the 15 permits issued during March of last year.

Most of the increase can be credited to the permit for one home, which is valued at $600,000.
