Two area men have become the first to cross Georgian Bay on foot.
Wingham-native Zane Davies and Lion's Head's Scott Parent made the 82-kilometre trek across the bay by foot and paddleboard earlier this month.
It took the two men three days to complete the journey, which Davies says was mostly trouble-free.
"We basically looked at all the risks involved with the crossing, and we figured out how to mitigate each risk," Davies told CKNX News after returning to his home near Lion's Head. "The open water we mitigated with the stand-up paddleboards, the chance of falling in we mitigated with being tied in to each other and wearing drysuits.
It's believed the two men are the first to walk across the bay in modern history.
"Both of us are trained as guides so we figured if anything should go wrong, we had plans in place and we had loved ones tracking us." Davies said.
Parent and Davies left from Cape Croker on March 11th and arrived at Twelve Mile Bay on March 13th.The first night the two slept, they traveled nearly 2 km after the ice they were on split and drifted.Davies and Parent both operate separate outdoor expedition businesses on the Bruce Peninsula.
