Over 1,700 students in Grey-Bruce have been issued suspension notices after failing to provide proof of immunization.
The Grey-Bruce Health Unit says if their parents fail to provide the information, their child may be suspended for 20 school days.
Under the Immunization of School Pupils Act, secondary and elementary students need to provide proof of immunization against measles, mumps and a number of other diseases.
“All students must be up-to-date with immunizations in order to provide a safe school environment for everyone and reduce the risk of vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks,” says Grey Bruce Medical Officer of Health Dr. Hazel Lynn in a media release.
The 1,762 notices are up from the 698 issued in 2012-2013.
Parents have up until April 20 to provide the information.
