Source Water Protection Policies Go Into Effect Soon

Officials from the Drinking Water Source Protection program are educating local residents on ways to protect their drinking water.

At an open house in Wingham, residents learned about potential risks and ways to prevent harm to the groundwater near municipal wells.

Source Protection Supervisor Jenna Allain say protecting the water at the source is the most efficient way to protect communities.

New regulations contain a list of 21 threats such as home oil tanks and septic systems. She also says history has show that it's much cheaper to protect water, than to clean it up and treat it.

The policies from the Source Protection Plan go into effect April 1.
