With pipes continuing to freeze in Saugeen Shores, municipal water users are being offered a break on their water bills.
Council has approved a recommendation to allow municipal water users to request an adjustment on their water bills for this winter, as a result of residents continuously running a tap to avoid frozen pipes.
Director of Public Works Stuart Doyle says the adjustment will be based on water usage during the same time period last year.
"Folks that are running their water to protect their services or ours can access this adjustment, so this years invoices will be based on the average they used in the previous year. Obviously, there will be some different circumstances that present themselves, and we'll try to work with every customer as best we can," says Doyle.
Residents will have until May 29 to request a water bill adjustment, which they will be able to do either online or at the Saugeen Shores municipal office.
Doyle says there have been more than 120 reported frozen water lines in Saugeen Shores this winter, but adds that number continues to climb, pointing out some cottage owners are only now discovering that their water pipes are frozen.
He says all municipal water users should continue to run a tap until further notice, adding it will be at least a few more weeks before the ground will be thawed enough for water pipes to be out of danger.
