Meaford council is exploring the possibility the Bluewater District School Board will agree to renting space at the local high school for Meaford Public Library.
Council voted Monday to direct Meaford’s treasurer, CEO and the chair of the Meaford Library Board to meet with the staff of the Bluewater District School Board. The Municipality’s school board liaison would also be involved in the discussions.
The purpose of the meetings is to consider various options for renting space at Georgian Bay Secondary School for the library.
The resolution also directs the Meaford delegation to provide council with a detailed report and their results. The delegates would need to complete the report before September.
Councillor Michael Poetker, who put forward the resolution, said he did so for several reasons.
One reason was the Province’s decision to close schools where attendance had dropped sharply or were in need of expensive repairs, or both.
Another reason was the disturbing findings of a consultants report to the school board. The report showed that Meaford’s high school and two elementary schools all faced structural problems, and had all suffered sharp declines in enrollment.
The third reason was a recommendation by Meaford council at its January 26 meeting. After reviewing a space needs study for the library, council directed staff to investigate the possibility of finding space in other public building in town for the library.
