With the melting snow and other signs of spring comes a reminder from the Perth District Health Unit -- it's time to get well water tested.
Public Health Inspector Kate Beath says the quality of well water can change frequently, and the best way to make sure it is safe is to have it tested in the spring, summer and fall.
Private well owners in Perth County can have their water tested free of charge. Water testing kits are available at the Perth District Health Unit office in Stratford, Knollcrest Lodge in Milverton, the Listowel Memorial Hospital outpatient lab, and local municipal offices during regular business hours.
Well owners who wish to have their water tested for chemicals such as nitrates and sulphur have to go through a licensed private laboratory, and there is a fee.
The health unit can provide information about properly maintaining your well, how to reduce risks of contamination, and treatment options.
