Snowmobile Week Starts In Ontario

Saturday marks the beginning of Snowmobile Safety Week in Ontario.

Provincial police are reminding snowmobile riders not to drink and drive, noting alcohol has been involved in all three snowmobile fatalities so far this year. Police also say two of the three victims were not wearing a helmet.

21 people died while snowmobiling in OPP jurisdictions last winter, and speed was found to be the primary cause in 11 of them. Alcohol was involved in at least seven of the mishaps.

The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs is reminding riders that not all trails are open in District 9, which covers Bruce, Grey and the northern parts of Huron, Wellington and Perth counties.

Riders are asked to check the trail status before going out. That can be done from the OFSC website at www.ofsc.on.ca or by calling 1-800-387-7669.
