Fire Training Centre In Meaford Busy

The Regional Fire Training Centre in Meaford appears to be catching on.

Since opening in April, Fire Chief Mike Molloy says about 90 firefighters from across the province have taken courses.

The centre has provided classroom and hands-on training in firefighter survival, search and rescue, pump operations, advanced auto extrication, and other related skills.

Earlier this month, the centre hosted a Firefighter Survival and Rapid Intervention Crew Training course. It's believed to be the first of its kind in Canada.

Molloy said the course also included practice in survival skills for firefighters.

“Firefighters learned how to escape from potentially fatal situations. Like what to do if they ever found themselves trapped by a fire,” he says.

Molloy expects the Meaford Centre will be able to run more firefighting courses and offer a greater variety in 2015.
