Longtime Dundalk Fire Chief John Thompson is stepping down after 37 years as a firefighter and 15 of those as chief.
He cited personal reasons.
Several members of council spoke glowingly of Thompson’s years on the job. Later in the same meeting, Thompson was hired by Southgate as a facilities operator in Dundalk.
"He is just an absolute gem of an employee and he is a great person," says Southgate Mayor Brian Milne. "His heart is very much in the fire department and very much in the community."
Larry Hutchins is running to be one of two Ward 7 councillors, representing the northeast part of Chatham.

The event was a formal tribute to the professionals who serve serve as the backbone of local health care.
No injuries are reported after a shed fire west of Wallaceburg, but damage is estimated at $150,000.
A house fire in Chatham has caused an estimated $250,000 in damage.
Sandra Dorner is running to be one of two Ward 8 councillors, representing the south part of Chatham.
