Woman asleep at wheel of running vehicle charged with impaired driving

A woman who was found asleep behind the wheel of a vehicle on a St. Thomas road is alleged to have had twice the legal limit of alcohol in her system.

A concerned citizen called St. Thomas police after seeing a person who appeared to be sleeping in her vehicle on an unnamed street early Sunday morning. Officers arrived on scene and found the woman passed out with the vehicle still in gear.

The woman was arrested and taken to police headquarters where a sobriety test was administered. According to police, the test showed the woman's blood alcohol level was more than double the legal limit.

A 28-year-old St. Thomas woman is charged with impaired driving and driving with a blood alcohol concentration level exceeding 80 mg of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. She has been released from custody with a future court date, police said.
