SIU clears London police after man breaks clavicle, fractures ribs

Ontario's police watchdog has cleared a London police officer after a man was injured while fleeing from officers last year.

The Special Investigations Unit was called in to investigate after a 42-year-old man fractured multiple ribs and broke his clavicle trying to flee from police while awaiting medical treatment at Victoria Hospital on November 22, 2023.

According to the SIU, just before the man was about to exit the hospital, an officer tackled the man to the ground.

The man was diagnosed with multiple rib fractures and a broken clavicle.

"On my assessment of the evidence, there are no reasonable grounds to believe that the [officer] committed a criminal offence in connection with the complainant’s arrest and injuries," said SIU Director Joseph Martino in a release. "As the complainant had given indication that he was determined to get away, the officers could expect he would physically resist once they caught him."

As a result, Martino says the investigation has been discontinued and the file is closed.
