SIU investigating collision involving police cruiser

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate following a crash involving a police cruiser that caused serious injuries.

Just after 4 p.m. on Tuesday, police were responding to an emergency in the city's north end. An officer operating a marked police car was involved in a collision with another vehicle at the intersection of Horton Street and Wharncliffe Road.

The driver of the second vehicle was taken to hospital for serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials, such as police, that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
