If you aren't particularly athletic but still want to be a part of the 2024 Ontario Summer Games, now is your chance.
The host organizing committee opened volunteer registration for the highly anticipated competition on Wednesday. Approximately 600 volunteers are needed to support the games being held in London over the Civic long weekend August 1 to 4.
"Many members of the community have already inquired about opportunities, so we’re excited to finally share more information," said Dave De Kelver, the general manager of the 2024 games. "Volunteers play a critical role in the success of these games. Whether you’ve volunteered in the past or this is your first time, we have roles for everyone and look forward to working with the community to create a memorable event for all involved.”
People interested in volunteering must be at least 14-years-old. They will have a chance during the application process to select a specific area where they would like to donate their time. Volunteer roles range from photography, transportation, medical, security, sport and event operations, and opening ceremonies. Prospective volunteers are required to submit a police vulnerable sector check with their application, the host organizing committee noted. To register to volunteer go to www.london2024.ca/volunteer. Applications will remain open until all the roles are filled.
Those selected to help out at the games will have to attend a mandatory training session where they will be given their volunteer package and t-shirt.
Roughly 3,500 teenage athletes as well as coaches and officials will come to the city for the four-day event, featuring 18 different sports. For the first time ever, flag football and women's baseball will be played as part of the games.
This is London's fifth time hosting the Ontario Summer Games. The competition that pits the province’s top young athletes against one another was previously held in the city in 2018, 2004, 1996, and 1975. It was originally slated to return to London in 2020 and 2021, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is anticipated the 2024 games will deliver an estimated economic impact to London of $5 million.
