YMCA aims to send 667 southwestern Ontario kids to camp

YMCA of Southwestern Ontario is more than halfway to reaching its lofty goal of sending 667 area kids to camp this summer.

The charity announced on Monday that through its 'fill the bus campaign', which launched last month, it has already secured camp spots for 445 kids. However, to get the remaining 222 kids to camp like it has set out, more donations are needed.

"Camp is an educational and magical experience. We truly believe that spending time away at camp equips kids with skills and confidence that they will take with them through to adulthood," said Andrew Lockie, CEO of YMCA of Southwestern Ontario. "We appreciate that the cost of camp is more challenging for some, and our fill the bus campaign raises funds to ensure every child can attend camp, regardless of their financial circumstances."

According to Lockie, who was an avid camper in his youth, children who attend camp report an increased environmental awareness, positive attitudes towards physical activity, emotional intelligence, personal development and self-confidence. He said that camp also helps cut down on screen time for children during the summer, by getting them outside and connecting with others.

London developer Drewlo Holdings recently donated $10,000 toward the YMCA's fill a bus campaign. The campaign aims to raise $100,000 to fill 20 school buses with 33 children each for a week-long camping adventure.

"As a charity, the Y would not be able to send these kids to camp independently, so we greatly appreciate the support of our donors and sponsors like Drewlo," said Christina Harley, The YMCA's VP of development. "We are absolutely thrilled to help so many kids have the experience of a lifetime this summer."
