SIU called after London man injured during downtown disturbance

London police have called in the province's police watchdog after a man sustained injuries during an arrest in the city's downtown on Thursday.

According to police, at around 1:20 p.m. on March 1, officers responded to reports of a disturbance in progress on Dundas Street, east of Richmond Street.

When officers arrived at the scene, they learned that one person had been assaulted. The extent of the victim's injuries is unknown. Police later located the suspect involved in the incident and took him into custody.

The accused, a 39-year-old man, is charged with assault, resisting arrest, and causing a disturbance. Police say he suffered injuries during his arrest and was later taken to hospital for treatment.

As a result, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate.

No other details will be provided by police while the SIU conducts its probe into the incident.
