Ontario's police oversight agency said it is not going forward with an investigation launched earlier this year after a man ended up with serious injuries near an east London overpass.
According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), on August 17, London police received a call from the man's wife, who told officers she was concerned about his well-being. The responding officers located the man in distress near the overpass on Highbury Avenue north of Dundas Street just after midnight.
"Officers negotiated with the man for about 90 minutes before he jumped from the bridge with a noose around his neck," a statement from the SIU read. "Officers cut the man down, and paramedics transported the man to hospital."
A statement from London police shortly after the incident stated that the man was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries at around 1:45 a.m. Afterwards, police contacted the SIU.
On Friday, the SIU announced it discontinued its probe.
"Based on the SIU’s preliminary inquiries, including a review of his medical records, the man did not suffer a serious injury within the mandate of the SIU leaving the Unit with no statutory jurisdiction in this matter," read a release from the agency.
