An Ojibwe-language fashion film produced by Fanshawe College students is getting noticed on the world stage.
“One = People + Planet” has been nominated for Best Eco Message at the Canadian International Fashion Film Festival (CANIFFF). The collaboration between Indigenous and non-Indigenous filmmakers and fashion designers focuses on a young Indigenous girl as she sits by a campfire reading a book with the same name as the film. It was produced as part of the college's 2022 Unbound Fashion Show.

“It’s so exciting for our students and faculty to see their work nominated by CANIFFF for Best Eco Message,” said Loren Couto, sustainable fashion professor, creative director of UNBOUND, and Canadian ambassador for sustainable fashion film at CANIFFF. “Fanshawe is a leader in sustainable fashion design, and this has been a wonderful opportunity for students in a number of programs to demonstrate their skills.”
The CANIFFF nomination is not the first recognition the film has received. It was nominated in the experimental category at the Forest City Film Festival and for best message at the Croatia Fashion Film Festival.
The Canadian International Fashion Film Festival and Awards are scheduled to take place in Toronto November 28 to 30.
If One wins, it will be the second Fanshawe fashion film to claim a prize at the international awards. In 2020, “UNBOUND Revival,” a film that was produced by Fanshawe students, was named best student film.
