Just over a week since London police announced the resurgence of the so-called grandparent scam in the city, there have been more reported incidents.
The police financial crime unit said Thursday it has received at least five additional complaints of people being led to believe a loved one is in legal trouble and needs fast cash. The scam hinges on the intended victim believing the person they are being contacted by is a family member, a police officer, or a lawyer and that a family member has been charged criminally and needs money for a lawyer or for bail.
In cases reported a week ago, a suspect went to the residence of the victim to pick up the large sum of money requested.
As the investigation into these incidents continues, police have released a second photo of a person they believe has information about the scam.
