Child's condition improving after fall from apartment window

The condition of a child who fell from a window of a southwest London apartment building is improving.

London police confirmed on Friday the child, whose age has not been released, has gone from being listed in critical condition to serious condition.

The youngster was rushed to hospital after falling from the window of an upper level unit at 301 Baseline Rd. West around 1:45 p.m. on Thursday. Police have not said what floor of the 11-storey apartment building the child fell from.

"To ensure that the child is not inadvertently identified, no additional details in relation to the age, gender, or the floor that the child fell from, will be released at this time," police said on Friday.

The high-rise at 301 Baseline is part of a two-building complex called Garden Vista Apartments. There is construction underway at the building with new balconies visibly being installed on some units. Calls by LondonNewsToday.ca to building owner Skyline Living have not been returned.

The probe into the child's fall is continuing.

"As with most cases involving small children, the investigation has been reassigned to members of the London Police Service Sexual Assault and Child Abuse section," police said.

This is the second time in eight months a child has fallen from an apartment building in London. Last October, a 22-month-old girl died after falling from the 20th-floor balcony of 400 Lyle St. The company that operates that building was ordered to fix some of the balcony guardrails following the girl's death as they were deemed to be below code.
