SIU ends probe into inmate's death at EMDC

The province's police watchdog has closed its investigation into the death of a 32-year-old London man who died after being found unresponsive at the Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre (EMDC) last month.

Brandon Marchant was arrested following a violent single-vehicle crash on the off-ramp to the OnRoute service centre on Highway 401 near Woodstock on July 1. Two people ejected from the vehicle were sent to hospital with serious injuries. The driver removed bags from the wreckage and took off before police arrived.

Marchant was arrested nearby without incident after a search by OPP. He was taken to hospital where he was treated and transferred to the EMDC. Just before 8 a.m. on July 3, Marchant was found unresponsive in his cell by correctional officers. He was taken back to hospital where he later died.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which had been notified by OPP when Marchant was first admitted to hospital, launched an investigation into the crash.

On Tuesday, SIU Director Joseph Martino announced the investigation had been terminated as there was no evidence police caused the man's death.

Marchant's cause of death remains unknown, the SIU added.

The 32 year-old was the third EMDC inmate to die this year and the 19th since 2009.
