Area hospitals given $9.1M for facility upgrades

Hospitals in the London-area are getting a $9.1 million financial boost from the province.

Elgin-Middlesex-London MPP Jeff Yurek announced the funding for upgrades and repairs on Thursday.

The London Health Sciences Centre will get $5.6 million, St. Joseph's Health Care London receives $2.1 million, St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital is in line for $1.3-million, and the West Elgin Community Health Centre will get $64,423. Another $16,695 has been allocated for the Salvation Army’s Centre of Hope.

“The Elgin-Middlesex-London region is home to some of the finest healthcare institutions in the country,” said Yurek. “This additional funding will help to support facility improvements and ensure staff and patient safety and comfort.”

The money will be used for urgent infrastructure needs at the five health care facilities. Those include upgrades to roofs, windows, security systems, and backup generators. A portion will also go to improvements of HVAC systems, patient and staff safety, and infection prevention and control measures related to COVID-19.

The funding is being distributed from the province's $182.6 million Health Infrastructure Renewal Fund and the Community Infrastructure Renewal Fund.
