Wharncliffe Rd. apartment fire deemed suspicious

A fire that caused $20,000 damage to an apartment building near Western is being called suspicious.

Firefighters were called to the highrise at 349 Wharncliffe Rd. N around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday. When crews arrived smoke could be seen coming from a sixth floor unit.

The building was evacuated while firefighters worked to extinguish the fire. Residents were allowed to return to their units after crews vented the smoke from the building.

There were no injuries reported.

London police said on Wednesday the fire has been deemed suspicious in nature. Officers with the police street crime unit, along with investigators from the Office of the Fire Marshal, continue to probe the cause of the blaze.
