Dozens of new cameras are being added to traffic signals across London in an effort to improve the flow of traffic throughout the city.
Once installed, the 80 cameras will provide live footage of roads.
"The new cameras will help inform the city, emergency services, and public transit of collisions or delays that are causing unexpected traffic conditions during peak travel periods,” said Traffic and Transportation Engineer Jon Kostyniuk. "The new traffic cameras will be placed across London on busier roads that have bus routes and high volumes of traffic."
The new cameras are different from London's red light camera program and speed enforcement cameras and will not be recording traffic infractions, vehicle speeds or personal information such as license plates, the city stated.
Currently, London's traffic management system connects over 400 signals across the city where signal timings can be modified remotely. According to the city, the new monitoring cameras will be installed to only point at roads and not private properties.
So far, nine city intersections have been upgraded with the new cameras, and over the next several weeks an additional 16 intersections will be equipped with the cameras. Installation will continue through the summer and into the fall.
Drivers may encounter temporary lane restrictions while cameras are being upgraded and installed.
