Provincial police are investigating after thieves made off with copper wire from the compound that surrounds a decommissioned Cold War-era submarine in Port Burwell.
According to Elgin OPP, a chain link fence was cut on the northeast side of the enclosure that protects the HMCS Ojibwa submarine sometime between March 15 and March 23. Once inside, thieves stole roughly 80 feet of copper wire.
The stolen wire is valued at $150-$200, police said.
HMCS Ojibwa, a 295 feet long, five storey high submarine, was decommissioned in 1998. It was brought to the Elgin Military Museum from Halifax in 2012.
Police are asking anyone with information about the theft to call them at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222- 8477 (TIPS).
