King St. garage fire deemed suspicious

London firefighters worked quickly Thursday morning to douse a large garage fire near the downtown that led to nearly a dozen 911 calls.

The blaze broke out in a two-car detached garage at 450 King Street, between Burwell and Maitland streets, around 7:15 a.m. The flames could be seen for quite a distance, prompting multiple calls to emergency services.

"It was fully involved at the time of our arrival," said London Fire Department Platoon Chief Gary Mosburger. "Our crews, with no exposures, focused our attention on the building itself, stretching multiple handlines, requiring a fire hydrant for water supply to contain the fire to the building."

By the time the fire was out, the roof was gone and one of the cinder block walls had collapsed, but nearby parked vehicles had been saved. Damage is estimated at $30,000.

No injuries were reported.

London police have determined the fire was suspicious in nature and continue to investigate.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 519-661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
