Flying tires on 401 prompt safety warning from police

Provincial police are asking drivers to inspect vehicles daily after two "concerning" incidents in Oxford and Middlesex that saw tires flying on Highway 401.

OPP were first called about a set of dual tires from a transport truck that were found laying in the ditch along the busy highway in Blandford-Blenheim Township around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Then, about two and a half hours later, officers were notified when a tire flew off of a vehicle in the westbound lanes near Westchester Bourne and hit the windshield of a tractor-trailer in the eastbound lanes.

In both cases, there were no injuries and the vehicles missing the tires were not found.

Police called the incidents concerning and are now reminding drivers, especially commercial vehicle operators, to perform a daily safety inspection prior to getting behind the wheel.

"The safety of everyone on the road depends on it," police said.
