SIU investigating London arrest that left man hurt

The province's police watchdog has been called in to probe an arrest by London police that left one man with injuries.

Officers with the guns and drugs section were in the south end around 5 p.m. on Thursday when they saw a man speaking with a woman. The communication between the two violated court-imposed conditions that had previously been placed on the man, according to police.

As such, officers moved in and arrested the man.

Twenty-six grams of cocaine, a loaded .40 calibre handgun and $11,600 cash were seized.

A 23-year-old London man is charged with nine offences including possession of a restricted or prohibited firearm without holding a licence, careless storage of a firearm, possession of a loaded regulated firearm, possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking, and failure to comply with release order.

Police contacted the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) after it was determined the man had suffered an undisclosed injury during his arrest.

The SIU is an independent civilian agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
