Two new COVID-19 cases in London, seven in Elgin-Oxford

Public health officials in London and Middlesex County are reporting another two cases of COVID-19, while seven additional infections were confirmed in Elgin and Oxford counties.

The Middlesex London Health Unit said one of the two people who tested positive for the virus on Tuesday works at a north London retirement home. That raises the number of cases in retirement facilities in the city and county to 71. This is the second day in a row the health unit has recorded two new cases.

The region's total case count is now 711.

There were no newly resolved cases reported in the area over the past 24 hours, leaving total recoveries at 625.

With no additional deaths in the area since June 12, the death toll remains at 57.

In Elgin and Oxford, there was a surge of seven new COVID-19 cases confirmed on Tuesday. It brings to an end two consecutive days of zero new positive tests. Since the start of the pandemic, there has been a total of 235 cases. Southwestern Public Health, the region's health unit, also said the number of resolved cases went up by four over the past 24 hour period to 195. No new deaths were reported.

Ontario has recorded its highest number of daily COVID-19 cases since July.

Public health officials said there were 125 new infections across the province on Tuesday. Ontario has not reported a number that high since July 31, when 134 cases were confirmed. It follows two straight days in which the daily case count remained under 100.

"An uptick over recent days and largely the result of localized increases with 17 cases in Peel, 27 in Toronto and 28 in Windsor-Essex. Today, 27 of 34 PHUs [public health units] are still reporting five or fewer cases, with 16 of them reporting no new cases," Health Minister Christine Elliott tweeted.

The province's total number of cases is now 40,870.

An additional four deaths related to the virus were also confirmed over the last 24 hours, raising the death toll to 2,793.

Ninety more Ontarians previously diagnosed with COVID-19 have since recovered, bringing the number of resolved cases to 37,126.

Currently, there are 41 people in Ontario hospitals receiving treatment for the virus.

In the last 24 hours, more than 23,000 additional COVID-19 tests were conducted across the province.
