Warning issued to St. Thomas family for failing to self-isolate

A family in St. Thomas got a talking to from police after failing to self-isolate after arriving home from international travel.

Acting on a tip from the public, Southwestern Public Health sent officers to the home to speak to the family. Two of the individuals had arrived in the city to stay with family at the end of July.

Under the Quarantine Act, anyone coming to Canada must isolate for 14 days and cannot receive visitors during that time.

Local Medical Officer of Health Dr. Joyce Lock also issued public health instructions under Section 22 of Ontario’s Health Protection and Promotion Act two weeks ago that gives the health unit more power to enforce quarantine rules. Anyone who violates the order can be fined up to $5,000 per day for every day the offence occurs or continues.

Southwestern Public Health has recently been grappling with a surge of new COVID-19 cases. Six more people in the area tested positive for the virus on Thursday, with a total of 43 new infections reported since Saturday. The region's total case count is currently 186, with 99 resolved and five deaths.
