Provincial police are reminding drivers to pay attention to road signs after a railway bridge in Zorra Township was hit by a transport truck for the seventh time in the last year.
Oxford OPP were called to the bridge on the 17th Line near Hamilton Road after the top of a truck scraped the bottom side of the structure around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. The bridge has signs clearly indicating its height, police said.
The bridge acted as a can opener, peeling the top right off the big rig's trailer. Fortunately, there were no injuries in the collision.
"This is a clear example of a preventable collision," OPP Inspector Anthony Hymers said in a statement. "A mindset of just following the GPS and ignoring the road signs has become too common an occurrence."
Police are now offering drivers some tips to avoid hitting low clearance bridges and overpasses, which includes paying attention to road clearance signs and keeping GPS devices updated. They also suggest having other reliable sources such as a map book or trucker's atlas.
