A well-known Londoner who has spent years advocating for more women to step into the political ring is leading by example.
Shawna Lewkowitz announced on Twitter and Facebook Wednesday that she has filed papers to seek the nomination as the NDP's candidate in London West in the upcoming federal election.
"I am ready to take the legacy of work I’ve done in our community, in organizations, on the streets and at the doorstep of government into the House of Commons and represent London West voices. I am driven by the many women before me who have courageously stepped up to run and shown us all what is possible – you are my inspiration," Lewkowitz said in her social media post.
Lewkowitz is the founder of Women & Politics, a London-based citizen-led group that aims to increase the number of women engaged in politics. She is also the president of the Urban League of London and a member of the city's Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Oppression Advisory Committee.
Her desire to enter federal politics is driven by what she called an "urgent need to move swiftly" on climate change, rights of Indigenous communities, housing, poverty, and rising health-care costs.
The seat in London West is currently held by Liberal Kate Young.
Canadians will go to the polls on October 21.
