Despite their best efforts, London's emergency responders found themselves invited to the party on St. Patrick's Day.
Police and firefighters were working all day Saturday, keeping an eye on thousands of young would-be Irish celebrating the holiday. Both departments had been using the motto "Don't invite us to your party", in an effort to keep partygoers celebrating responsibly.
Most people were doing just that, though police were called to several houses for so-called "nuisance parties", in which huge crowds jammed the front porches and lawns of homes, generating complaints about drinking with open containers, underage drinking, noise and other infractions.
London Assistant Fire Chief Jack Burt said via his Twitter account that officers had been issuing warnings about alcohol use since Saturday morning. Later on, officers were showing up at homes to shut down loud parties.
One party was shuttered on St. George St. off Mill St around noon time, according to London police, while an illegal tent party was shut down in north London.
Another large party was snuffed on Central Ave. Police say an $880 citation was issued to the resident at that location.
In addition to noise and alcohol complaints, authorities have also been watching for smoke alarm infractions, which Burt said could cost a homeowner $360 in fines.
As night fell in London and St. Pat's parties were in full swing, police reported no major problems. More information regarding arrests or citations issued will be available later in the weekend.
