In a move that will bring dozens of new jobs to the city, a London countertop manufacturer is doubling its production capacity with a little the help from the federal government.
Hanwha L&C Canada Inc. is receiving $15-million from the federal government for a $45.1-million expansion at its Innovation Dr. facility.
London-area MPs Peter Fragiskatos, Kate Young, and Irene Mathyssen made the announcement on Friday.
"Canadian manufacturers are taking on the challenges of an increasingly global and competitive marketplace. FedDev Ontario's investment will support Hanwha's long-term success in London, create high-skilled jobs for Canadians, and pave the way for future foreign investment in the region," said Fragiskatos.
After the 60,000 sq ft expansion is complete, Hanwha will be able to manufacture a new line of countertops and flooring, adding 85 new full-time jobs. Government officials note 100 indirect jobs will be created through spin-off employment.
Currently, the London facility employs 110 full-time workers.
The London facility will also become the South Korean manufacturer's North American headquarters.
"This investment will allow us to continue to be innovative in our manufacturing of HanStone Quartz, create employment opportunities and contribute to a healthy London economy," said Myeong-Ho Han, president & CEO, Hanwha L&C.
While the bulk of the expansion will be paid for by Hanwha, the provincial government is also kicking in $1.5-million.
Hanwha has been manufacturing stone-based products in London since August 2009. Their made-in-London countertops and flooring are sold at Home Depot, Rona, and IKEA.
