McAdams, Donoghue Get Oscar Nods

There's a local connection to the Academy Awards this year.

St. Thomas native Rachel McAdams and London-based author Emma Donoghue have been nominated for Oscars. McAdams is among the nominees for best supporting actress for her role in "Spotlight". The film chronicles the efforts of the investigative reporters with the Boston Globe who covered the abuse of children by Catholic priests in the Boston area.

Donoghue, who was born in Ireland but is now based in London, is nominated in the category of best adapted screenplay for ``Room.'' She adapted her own novel of the same name for the big screen. The story is about a young boy held captive in a shed with his mother. The child has no idea there's a world outside that shed.

"Room" and "Spotlight" are also among the nominees for best picture.
