Charges Laid In Hwy. 401 Flying Wheel Crash

Provincial police say charges have been laid in a crash caused by a wheel that flew off of a trailer on Hwy. 401 in London.

Middlesex OPP were called to the eastbound lanes of the highway, west of Old Victoria Rd. around 6:55am on Thursday after a car crashed into a transport truck.

The investigation determined the car spun out and crashed after swerving to avoid a flying tire.

The driver of the car, a 32-year-old London man, was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries. No one else was hurt in the incident.

Police say the tire popped off of a trailer that was being towed by a pickup truck in the westbound lanes and bounced over the median into the eastbound lanes.

The driver of the pickup, a 24-year-old Dundas man, is charged with four driving offences including operating an unsafe vehicle, wheel separation - commercial motor vehicle, and failure to surrender insurance card.
