UPDATE: Search Continues For Missing Swimmer

An 18-year-old swimmer remains missing at Port Stanley beach after rescue crews spent much of Thursday conducting a search.

The Ontario Provincial Police say on Thursday around 3:50pm, emergency crews responded to the area at the end of William St. after receiving a call about two swimmers who were in distress.

A 19-year-old woman was able to make it to shore with assistance from life guards and has received medical attention. However, an 18-year-old man has failed to return to shore.

A red beach warning flag was posted at the time, which indicates dangerous swimming conditions

Members of the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) Trenton, the Elgin OPP Marine Unit, the United States Coast Guard, and Ornge responded to the scene to look for the swimmer.

Police say "rescue efforts have turned to recovery efforts" with divers expected to be deployed Friday morning to assist with the search.

A portion of the Port Stanley main beach near the pier remains cordoned off.
