The calendar may say that it is spring, but winter could put on an encore performance this weekend.
Environment Canada has ended a snow squall watch for London-Middlesex.
The weather agency expects a series of low pressure systems coming from the Prairies will bring 5 cm of snow for Saturday afternoon, and the chance of 10-15 cm overnight Saturday.
Meteorologist Geoff Coulson says April snow is not unheard of in the London-area.
"We should be seeing on average about 9 cm for the month of April. Certainly with the amounts we are talking about, especially those amounts locally and some of the snow squall activity some folks are going to get that monthly allotment during the course of the weekend," he says.
The snow will also come with temperatures well below seasonal with daytime highs of 2 C and -1 C for Saturday and Sunday. Coulson says the warm weather won't return for several days.
"The way the models are shaping up, it looks like a return to more seasonal temperatures by about the middle part of April. Where we should be temperature wise is daytime highs of about 9 C."
The blast of snow may come as a shock to some and weather officials admit this kind of volatility is unusual.
"This is the time of year where we do expect to see some pretty wild swings in temperature. It is a transition period," says Coulson. "This type of variation, a sharp variation, is not something we see all that often. Especially going from some pretty mild temperatures just in the past week or so to what will be in effect 10 degrees colder than normal through the weekend and into the first part of next week."
