Cops Exposed To Blood-borne Illness

Two St. Thomas police officers are going to have their health monitored after coming into contact with the blood of a suspect who has a blood-borne communicable disease.

The officers were called around 10:40am on Tuesday to reports of an extremely intoxicated man who was walking in and out of traffic on Talbot St. The man had minor injuries and was bleeding.

The officers arrested him and, during the arrest, came into contact with the man's blood. Both officers were treated at St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital and released. Health officials will continue to monitor the officers for any future health issues.

Privacy laws prevent police from releasing the nature of the man's specific illness.
