Microburst Caused London Storm Damage

The fast-moving storm that swept across southern Ontario on Saturday did not include a tornado.

Environment Canada determined that a microburst was responsible for uprooting trees, downing branches and tearing the roof off a three-storey walk-up on Godfrey Dr.

The weather office estimates the winds on Saturday afternoon reached 100-120 km/hr. "Damaging wind gusts ...were responsible for the failure of a roof and tree damage, as well as an air conditioner on the roof of a shopping centre which was pushed off its pedestal. There were also reports of wind damage to trees, and minor damage buildings in the Bryanston to St. Marys areas from the thunderstorms."

Torrential downpours came along with the thunderstorms, and Environment Canada received reports of sudden flooding in the Windsor area and in the Waterloo region.
