Caution Urged While Snowmobiling

The OPP and the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs are urging caution following three serious snowmobile crashes in less than a week.

Snowmobilers are being asked to stay on OFSC approved trails across the province.

"80% of fatalities do not occur on OFSC trails, it's people riding where they shouldn't be riding in the first place, on public roads, private fields, on lakes," says Craig Nicholson with OFSC. "There's just enough snow to cover and obscure obstacles, but not enough snow to actually cushion or blanket them. You can hit rocks, stumps, ditches, culverts."

Nicholson says it is also key to dress for the weather and pay attention to local forecasts.

Snowmobile Safety Week runs from January 17-25.
