Laurier lose Vanier Cup to Laval

A monstrous game from a Chatham-Kent resident wasn’t enough for the Laurier Golden Hawks to win the 2024 Vanier Cup.

They took on the Laval Rouge et Or on Saturday in Kingston, Ontario and ended up losing 22-17. This was Laurier’s first loss of the season.

CK’s Ethan Jordan caught 11 passes for 179 yards which was 100 yards more than the game’s second leading receiver. He was coming off a historic season which saw him lead the country in receptions (59), touchdowns (10), yards per game (125), and total yards (1000) by a receiver.

It was Laval’s kicker Felipe Forteza who arguably won the game as he made six field goals with the Rouge et Or’s other four points coming on two separate safeties.

The only touchdowns in the game came from the Golden Hawks. The first was a five-yard receiving score from Ryan Hughes with the second being a three-yard receiving touchdown by Jaxon Stebbings.

Laurier Quarterback Taylor Elgersma completed 23 of his 34 passes for 246 yards. His counterpart Arnaud Desjardins collected 320 passing yards.

This was Laurier’s sixth appearance in the Vanier Cup, its first since winning it in 2005. The loss puts the Golden Hawks’ championship record to 2-4.
